Dog Winter Gear Guide: Coats, Vests and Boots for Cold Weather

Quick answer: Pick a coat by your dog's size and coat type: a hooded, lined puffer or parka for small dogs, a fleece turtleneck for slim sighthounds, and a padded vest with D-rings for easy leash access. Measure back length and chest before ordering. For wet or slushy walks, add boots sized by paw length and width, and let your dog practice indoors first.

Not every dog wants or needs a coat, but small, short-haired and slim dogs often feel the cold sooner on winter walks. Good winter gear is about fit first: a coat that slides around or boots that twist will be shaken off in minutes. Here is what we carry and how to size it.

How to choose a coat

Small dogs: hood and lining

Small dogs lose warmth fast and sit close to wet ground. The Hooded Puffer Jacket has a padded, windproof and water-resistant shell, fleece lining in the body and hood, and a D-ring opening so you can clip the leash to a harness underneath. The Military Style Parka adds a fluffy-trimmed hood and snap buttons down the belly; it is sized for small dogs up to about 14 lb.

Quick on, quick off: a vest

If your dog dislikes having legs pulled through sleeves, a vest is easier. The Padded Zip Winter Vest closes with a full zip and has two D-rings on the back for the leash. Its own listing advises clipping a strong puller to a harness instead, which we agree with.

Sighthounds and bigger dogs

Greyhounds and whippets have long necks and deep chests, so standard coats often fit poorly. The Fleece Greyhound Coat is cut long and slim with a high turtleneck. For larger dogs that just need a cozy layer on cool days, the Teddy Fleece Vest (from $15.99) comes in sizes L to 7XL, for dogs up to about 77 lb.

How to choose boots

Boots help keep paws covered and cleaner on wet, slushy or rough ground. The Knit Sock Boots combine a soft knit upper with a rubber sole and a strap. The Rubber Pull-On Boots are thin waterproof latex covers with no straps, good for rain and mud. For small dogs, the Dipped-Sole Sock Boots (from $10.99) have a waterproof sole, though the knit top is not waterproof.

Sizing and measuring tips

  • Back length: measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail.
  • Chest: measure around the widest part of the rib cage behind the front legs. For most coats this is the measurement that matters most.
  • Neck: measure where the collar sits, for hooded coats and turtlenecks.
  • Between sizes? Most of our coat charts suggest choosing the larger size. The zip vest suggests a chest size about 1 in bigger than your dog's chest.
  • Paw size for boots: stand your dog on paper, mark the front and back and both sides of a front paw, and measure length and width. Pick the size just above those numbers. The rubber pull-on boots are sized by weight instead.
  • Practice indoors. Let your dog wear boots around the house for short periods before the first walk, and check the paws after each walk.
  • Never leave your dog unattended in a coat or boots, and take boots off after the walk.

Our quick take

For a small dog in a cold climate, a lined hooded jacket is the most useful single piece. For sighthounds, choose a cut made for their shape. Add boots if your walks are wet or slushy, and give your dog time to get used to them. Fit and comfort decide whether the gear actually gets worn.

FAQ

Does my dog need a winter coat?

It depends on the breed, coat, size and how cold it gets where you live. Small, short-haired and slim dogs are the ones owners most often dress for winter walks. If you are unsure, ask your vet.

Can I use a leash with these coats?

Yes. The puffer jacket has a back opening to clip the leash to a harness underneath, and the zip vest has two D-rings. For strong pullers, clip to a harness rather than the coat.

My dog walks strangely in boots. Is that normal?

Many dogs high-step at first. Short indoor sessions and treats usually help. Take the boots off if your dog seems uncomfortable and check the fit.

Which coats come in big dog sizes?

The Fleece Greyhound Coat goes up to 5XL (dogs up to about 88 lb), the Teddy Fleece Vest to 7XL, and the Padded Zip Vest to 5XL (chest about 25.8 in). The puffer jacket and parka are sized for small dogs.
